Feel like writing a post on how to narrow down a list of 200 grad schools to 12? I've got them organized by state right now, but I'm thinking that I should be paying more attention to their research facilities (although, no matter how nice the facilities, I am NOT embarking on my grad school adventure in Ohio).

Mark,
Your last couple of posts are very interesting and very true. CareerBuilder posted and article about that very thing (http://www.careerbuilder.com/jobseeker/careerbytes/cbarticle.aspx?articleID=835) I think the best thing someone can do is have several people review their resume before submitting it, or maybe even have a professional resume writer create it. Either way the main points of how you meet the job requirements and what your past accomplishments are have a huge impact on those that do the hiring.
As part of our interviews we have asked a few applicants what their biggest mess up or faux pas was and how they handled it. This question can really shows how the person reacts under pressure, especially when they know they are the ones that caused the problem. As a System Administrator, I have done some things that weren't my brightest moments. The fact that I owned up to the problem and fixed it is viewed with appreciation by my managers. Employers want to know that you'll own up to the problem, fix it and move on. They don't want someone who will point fingers or slink off into the background.

After reading a number of resumes and cover letters, did you come across any creative/effective approaches that caught your attention and further distinguished the candidate from their peers? If so, please elaborate.

Mark,

I find it interesting that you wrote ..."As part of Senior Design, I lead discussions on ethics, and have the students write essays on the topics. Some students don’t take this very seriously, or don’t put much thought into it...."

I'm a writer for an engineering society publication and I frequently cover topics on professional ethics. Please shoot me an email if you'd like to further explain the seriousness of engineering students when it come to ethics.

Thanks!

Dear Boss,

I didn't finish setting up that new server. You only gave me a couple of days to do it in and barely enough information about what it was for. I will be able to finish building it as soon as you reply to me with more details.

Worker Bee

Dear Worker Bee,

I told you when I gave you the assignment that you needed to setup the hardware in the data center, load the OS with patches, have the storage team assign some storage and then notify the DBA's. Please come to my office immediately, I have a pink piece of paper with your next set of instructions on it.
